Dalian, China

Event:  Dalian Furniture Show
Location:
Dalian, China
Dates:
June 6 – 9th

Dalian is at the southern end of the Liaodong Peninsula, with the Yellow Sea to the east and the Bohai Sea to the west. Its position makes it a marine gateway for northeast China. The urban-rural municipality covers about 12,600 square kilometers, and has a population of around five million people.

Dalian enjoys a temperate continental monsoon climate. The average annual temperature is around ten degrees Celsius, with highs of 35 degrees in August and the lows of minus 21 in January. Rain falls often in summer, particularly at night.

The SEC will begin this busy week of activities at the Dalian Furniture Show.  It may be surprising that the Dalian show is in June 2004 as a result of the 2003 being in October, however, the 2003 show was pushed back to October due to SARS.

2003 Highlights:  Last year’s Dalian had more than 90% of the audience coming from the local Dalian region. They were mostly plywood manufacturers, lumber traders, decoration companies, interior decoration designers, furniture manufacturers, wood door manufacturers and flooring companies.   The 8th China (Dalian) International Furniture & Woodwork Mechanism Expo attracted furniture & woodwork mechanism enterprises from more than 10 countries such as America, Japan, Korea, and EU members to join in the expo.  Besides the organizations of AHEC, American Forest, and SEC, countries like Singapore, Holland, Japan, etc. also assigned delegations to attend the expo.

As commissioned by Softwood Export Council, a customer opinion survey was carried out during the “The 8th China Dalian International Furniture & Woodworking Machinery Exhibition” in Dalian, China on 14th-17th October 2003. Major findings are listed as below:

Most respondents are local customers. Over 99 percent came from China while there was only one overseas company.  The exhibition attracts visitors mostly from nearby region, 95.4% respondents came from the Northeastern provinces of Liaoning (遼寧省), Shandong (山東省), Jilin (吉林) and Heilongjiang (黑龍江省).

Many respondents are direct lumber users such as furniture manufacturers (38.5%), indoor application (19.2%) and interior design (5.4%).  Only small proportions are intermediate users such as for woodworking processing (13.1%), and traders (4.6% is wood agent and 3.8% is exporters).

While most respondents are direct lumber users, 40.5% respondents currently use softwood for their business.  Applications of softwood can be found in furniture manufacturing (52.3%), panels and wood boards manufacturing (18.7%), and interior application manufacturing (13.1%).

About one third of respondents rely on local lumber supply (30.4%).  It is followed by Russian imports, which 26.4% said they use lumber from this close neighbors. 16.0% and 12.0% of respondents said they source lumber from Canada and USA respectively. Other countries such as Indonesia, New Zealand only play an insignificant role as lumber source.

In this survey, respondents’ awareness to US softwood species is medium.  Only three species are fairly popular among them.  Over 40 percent of them have heard of Douglas fir (47.5%), Hemlock (45.0%) and Ponderosa Pine (42.5%). Other species are far less popular among this group of respondents.

Trade shows are the most popular form of channel for knowing the US softwood. It is also a major source of information hub for them to collect information in making purchasing decision.  However, as many respondents did not provide answer to this question, it is difficult to tell the effectiveness of other channels.

Factors affecting their purchasing decision include quality and grading (78.7%).  Over half of them said price is also an important criterion (57.3%).  Other factors such as the dimensional stability, hardness and surface appearance are also important criteria for some companies.

Qingdao, China

Event:  AHEC Convention
Location:
Qingdao, China
Dates:
June 9 – 11th

Qingdao is a city on the Shandong peninsula and the Yellow Sea.  More famous for its beer than its commerce, Qingdao is quickly developing into a robust metropolitan that serves as the commercial and trading hub of Northern China.

Mild summer temperatures averaging a relatively low 23 degrees Celsius help Qingdao attract visitors from elsewhere in China for seaside vacations. Late January and early February are wet and colder, with temperatures down to three degrees.

The AHEC convention, themed “Strength in Diversity-Using U.S. Hardwoods to Enhance Design  and Profitability,”  is a two-day convention held at the Shangri-La Hotel and is expected to bring together more than 400 architects, property developers, interior designers, contractors, and furniture manufacturers in Greater China and Southeast Asia in addition to many AHEC company members.

The convention program will feature an interactive format that will allow attendees to learn how the quality and diversity of American hardwoods and softwoods can enhance product design and improve profitability from leading architects and designers from the US, Europe and Asia.  Keynote speakers will cover a diverse array of topics including design concepts for using US woods in public spaces, innovative furniture design and about how proper lighting can be used to highlight the beauty of U.S. natural woods.

The 2002 show boasted 700 members of the Chinese and South East Asian wood industry and 50 members of AHEC.  US wood exporters also participated in the furniture manufacturing tours and visited one of the new 2500 hi-rise residential development sites.  From all the new hi-rises being built in Shanghai alone, 30-40% of total cost allocated toward interior fittings. The convention and tours are designed, as aforementioned, as a networking opportunity to the developers of such building projects and manufacturing companies of furniture.  With AHEC’s exciting convention program, delegates will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of U.S. wood industry and participate in the event’s unique East-meets-West where participants can network with their peers and exchange professional opinions.

Subject: Ninth Annual AHEC Greater China & Southeast Asia Convention

Good morning AHEC (and SEC) members,

I am proud to announce that this year's 9th Greater China & Southeast Asia convention is themed "Strength in Diversity-Using U.S. Hardwoods to Enhance Design and Profitability."

The convention will be held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Qingdao, PRC and is expected to bring together more than 400 architects, property developers, interior designers, contractors, and furniture manufacturers in Greater China and Southeast Asia in addition to many AHEC company members. Building upon the success of similar events held in Greater China (Shanghai - 1998 & 2002, Beijing - 1999 and Guangzhou - 2001), this year's convention in Qingdao marks the first time AHEC convenes in the northern capital of Shandong Province and underscores the city's growing importance of the metropolitan city as the commercial and trading hub of northern China.

The convention program will feature an interactive format that will allow attendees to learn how the quality and diversity of American hardwoods can enhance product design and improve profitability from leading architects and designers from the US, Europe and Asia. Delegates will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of U.S. hardwoods and network with their peers and exchange professional opinions.

Please note that the site visit listed on the registration form is geared toward designers and architects that are interested in seeing applications of US hardwoods.  It is not a factory visit.

To register for the convention, please consult the online registration website at:

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact AHEC Washington at 202/463-2720 or AHEC Greater China at www.ahec-china.org

Andrew
