Seasoning & Sizes
Douglas fir is naturally dimensionally stable and extremely so after seasoning. While buying products in the DRY condition ensures the greatest dimensional stability of individual pieces, GREEN Douglas fir also is widely used for framing because this species, unlike any other, has the ability to season well in position.
Solid-sawn Douglas fir HIRAKAKU may be ordered unseasoned, i.e. GREEN (above 19% moisture content [MC]), or seasoned, i.e. DRY (19% or less MC), or kiln dried to moisture content levels specified through buyer/seller agreements. U.S. producers estimate that approximately 80% of the HIRAKAKU from their mills in the Pacific Northwest is shipped DRY to meet the specific requirements of customers.
The most readily available sizes are 105 mm x 150 mm through 120 mm x 360 mm, in lengths from 2.8 metres to 6.0 metres. Many Northwestern producers ship bundle-by-bundle orders and provide custom sizes through buyer/seller agreements.
