Between Feb 17 - 23 American Softwood exhibited in the KH Housing Fair in Seoul. The KH Housing Fair is the biggest construction and materials show of Korea.  During the 6 day long show, American Softwoods booth had 1063 visitors. The booth was hosted by American Softwoods staff and members of APA, PLEA and WWPA.

American Softwoods had also hosted Industry dinner along with its Korean market campaign. The dinner attendees were from major architectural firms, builders, suppliers and leading industry media such as;
-The Weekly Wood News
-The Korea Wood Newspaper- a bi weekly
-The Wood Newspaper- a bi weekly
-The Garden House- monthly

 
The four media who attended the meeting ran articles on the event introducing the SEC/APA's comeback plan in the Korean market.The message of the media coverage was to welcome the U.S. industry's increased role in the Korean wood housing market which is now dominated by Canada. Especially of  which, "The Weekly Woodnews " made a special coverage allocating  a bigger space in three pages to cover the US softwood industry's plan and interest in the Korean market. The cover page titled The Land of Three Countries (Canada, USA and Japan) competing for the Korean wood housing market mainly focused on the US side analyzes and forecasts.

In 2008 Korea had imported total of $9.6 million American softwoods with an 228% increase.
 
US Softwood Lumber Export to China in 2008

According to Global Trade Stats, US softwood lumber (HS 440710) exports in China were valued at US$ 26.3 million, down 1% in volume and 15% in value from 2007. Local importers indicated that even though they imported almost the same volume as previous year the total value decreased in 2008 due to the lower unit price compared with 2007.

Interestingly, China's statistic data released through GTA indicated that China's import of US softwood lumber in 2008 was 87,000 m3 and US$ 26.5 million, actually up 15.1% in volume and 12.3% in value from 2007.

Severe Challenge Posed to China's MDF Industry
 
Affected by global financial crisis, China's fiber board industry is facing severe challenge for both export and domestic sales. The total market demand of declined about 60-70%. The inventory volume has been increased significantly, resulting that most of MDF mills have to cut down the price or curtail their production. China's MDF industry, according a mill manager, is entering into from- bad- to- worse stage. Following the closure of several hundred furniture manufacturers in 2008, it is expected that there are more mills shutdown in March or April.

China's Export of Wood-based Panel Decreased in 2008
 
According to statistics from the Chinese Customs, China exported 5
7.1766 million m3 plywood in 2008, down 17.62% and 18.25 from previous year. Except for slight increase to US and Russia, China's MDF export to other countries and region experienced downturn in 2008. China's plywood to U.S. declined over 38%.

China's Log Import
In Jan, the total volume of log import was 1.27 million m3 and valued at US$ 209 million,
55.16% down in volume and 56.58% down in value from same period last year. The log imported from Russia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea accounted for 49.43%, 11.52% and 7.03% in volume, respectively.
