Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam, is an emerging market for U.S. softwood exports. In 2010 imports of U.S. softwoods were almost 12.5 mmbf, which was nearly double the amount imported in 2009. The bulk of that material, much of it ponderosa pine and low-grade hemlock, is used in furniture manufacturing, including frames for upholstered sofas and chairs. At 9.2 mmbf imported in 2010, Vietnam is the third largest international market for hemlock lumber from the U.S. (behind only China and Canada).
